Saturday Spotlight

As we usher in March like a lamb (at least for us in the Northeast), we’d like to remind you of some important dates coming up. Daylight Savings Time begins on the 11^th and we all know what that means – one less hour to stamp!! St. Patrick’s Day is on the 17^th (cheers!) and the first day of Spring is on the 20^th. BUT……..the most special day of them all is the 9^th – Paper and Such release day!!!!!!!!!

While we anxiously await that day to arrive, here are some beautiful cards made with a Unity Itty Bitty set called “Call Me”. This sweet, simple card was made by Debra Miller (djmillerwi on SCS). I’m a big fan of CAS cards, especially when they use kraft as the base. There’s just something about the combo of kraft, black and white that makes it look so classy. I also love how she added that touch of kraft in the baker’s twine too.

Did you know that Heinz Ketchup was invented the same year that Alexander Graham Bell made his first phone call? Maybe he was calling someone to find out what goes well with French fries??? Alexander Bell thought that instead of answering “Hello”, we should be saying “Hoy, Hoy”. I’m sorry Mr. Bell, but when someone on the other end doesn’t answer my “Hello”, I find it hard to say “Hoy, Hoy” in a snarky tone.

This cute little tent topper card was made by pinkgirl76. What caught my eye first was the black layer (ribbon?) that was cut so differently. I think her colors blend so well together and make that cute little “Miss You” stand out and take center stage.

When Mr. Bell died, as a tribute to him, all the telephones stopped ringing for one minute. Good luck getting that to ever happen again. You know someone at the movies will ruin it for everyone – LOL. In 1876 the first phone was invented. By 1915 there were over 11 million!!! One of the first to own one in his home was Mark Twain.

I chose this last card, made by jeanstamping2, because the newsprint paper caught my eye. I like the contrast of the shiny ribbon and black pearls to the antiquy-ness of the phone image. I really like the aged look of patterned paper and think this one is very classy.

When phones were first invented, there wasn’t a way to time calls, so phone companies changed customers a flat rate for their monthly service. Kind seems like we’ve come full circle on that one, haven’t we? At present, there are approximately 149,084,370 telephone lines in the world and thousands more are being added every day. Boggles your mind, doesn’t it?

put some glue on them and then just swirled the

twine around in a circle. I actually quite like this.

My name is Shannan Teubner, and I am a mother, daughter, sister, hairstylist, paper crafter, retired sales rep, music lover, un-domestic goddess, & master procurement agent. I am a stay-at-home mama…my two boys keep me super busy with school, soccer, baseball, band, church, and all the other normal kid stuff. I grew up with a love of crafting…my grandmother taught us to knit and embroider from a very early age. I even remember being so engrossed in a project that I sewed it to my shorts!

Saturday Spotlight

As we embark on yet another chilly, windy weekend here in our little corner of South Central Pennsylvania, I’d like to remind you of some great things that are happening at Paper and Such. First, we are hosting another great challenge in partnership with the Catered Crop! Check out their site or the blog post below for more details. Our own challenge will be posted this coming Tuesday. We had some awesome entries in the LOVE contest and we are excited to see what you all create for this next one.

For this week’s edition, we’d like you to fall in love with one of our newest sets – Wild Rose. Amber used this set to create pretty, yet simple personalized note cards. She used coordinating colors and then added a flourish on the envelope to match. Can I just say how adorable these are?!! With the 2-step stamping style of this set, these would be a breeze to make! For those of you with children in school, these would make perfect teacher gifts!

Wild roses are mainly found in British Columbia, Canada; but have migrated across most of the North American continent. The bushes generally grow from 2-5 feet in height with bright pink blooms that can turn into bright red also. The leaves are saw-toothed with about 5-7 per stem.

This elegant card was made by Janice. She was on the lookout for an old dictionary and found one thru a relative. She then distresses the pages by using Ranger inks and wrinkling them up a bit. The antique brass brads and button along with the coordinating yarn all add to the nostalgia feel of the aged paper. I like how she kept the image muted, but still a focal point.

The seed pods on the Wild Rose are the fruit of the plant, called Rosehips. These are apple flavored and very high in Vitamin C. They can be used to make such things as jams and jellies to syrup. Rosehips are best when picked after the first frost of the season, but open one first to check for worms!

Our last card of the week was made by Stephanie. What’s striking about this one is the paper bag pocket that holds the sentiment/tag. As an avid reader, I can see this adorable tag used as a bookmark too! I love her choice of papers to compliment the rose image. The colors are such a great balance between the bright reds to the olive-y greens.

The Wild Rose plant can not only produce a fragrant, edible fruit, but the leaves petals and roots are known to make a delightful tea as well. It is also well-known that rosewood makes excellent arrows too.

Spreading Sunshine

Hi there! Here's a sneak peek at one of the new sets being released tomorrow at Paper and Such! Isn't it just beautiful?! These pretty daffodils make me want Spring to get here even more!

I chose to color my daffodils with Copics in a white and peachy tone. Not all daffodils are yellow you know! I layered up some MME papers and topped it off with a sheer natural colored bow and a sweet little butterfly punch. A few pearls in the corner and voila'!

Can you believe that it’s February already?? We at Paper and Such are so excited for our release day and blog hop on the 9^th! We hope you’ll join us for all of the fun and prizes! For this week’s post, I wanted to do something really special. I was hoping that I could find a TON of information on the subject that I chose, but alas I was wrong. I do have a surprise at the end, so please make sure you read the whole post!

I’m spotlighting our adorable set “Tree Graffiti” that we debuted last month. What I like best about Kendra’s card is that she made the tree into a 3D effect. Also, do you notice how she didn’t have to use a lot of glam and glitz to make this card say WOW!? She let the image and her choice of papers do that for her – sheer genius!

Woodcarving (Xploglyphy) is most likely one of the oldest art forms. Some of the finest examples can be found in pieces from the Middle Ages. From there, woodcarving developed advancements to further the craftsmanship of furniture making and all other crafts. Iconography is the art form featuring religious artifacts.

You know you’re a great card maker, like Pattie here, when you can create a CAS card that has texture just on the image!! How on EARTH did she do that? Maybe we can talk her into a tutorial? What do you say? And isn’t that pop of red just the sweetest!? I just love that little heart with the button on top!

For trees, it’s a very dangerous thing to be carved while still alive. If the carving is too deep, it can weaken the tree by eliminating a portion of their path to get food. This even can result in the death of the tree! Even though we are paper crafters, we don’t want to damage the environment any more than we have to, so I suggest that instead of carving your initials into a tree, you just purchase our stamp instead…….. :)

Ok, here’s the surprise I was telling you about. I found this site - Dalton Ghetti . Just look at what that man can carve onto the tip of a pencil!!!!! Your challenge – should you accept it, is to choose one of his creations as inspiration and create a card. Are you ready for Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day is just a few weeks away are you ready? Bitty Love is the perfect set for those Valentine treats for your special someone or for the kids Valentine parties.

I first used them as cupcake toppers. Coloring them with copics and cutting them out with Nesties. I didn't have any candy sticks so I found some straws that I cut in half and taped them to the images.

I still have kids in elementary that have Valentine parties and hand out Valentines. Of course we prefer to make ours and what better Valentines to give out than suckers with sucker covers! These are so simple that even your kids can help. (that is if you like to share the fun you are having ;) ) And of course the "big" kids love these too as I'm sure my preteen will grab these to hand out to her friends!

The sucker covers are 5 1/2 by 2 1/2, scored at 3 3/16, 3 9/16, 11/16 and 15/16. Fold on score lines, punch a hole in between the smaller score lines. Add a little bit of tape to the little lip so it will stay shut after the sucker is in.

Well I hope I have helped you if you are stuck in a "what to do for my kids for Valentine's Day" rut!

Saturday Spotlight With a Twist!

This week, we're changing it up for the Saturday Spotlight. As some of you might know, our fearful....... I mean fearLESS leader, Julie, just had surgery. Now she's just fine, no need to panic. She did have her rotator cuff fixed and is a little sad to be out of stamping commission for a bit.

Here's where all of you come in. I'd like everyone to make her a get well card! You Rule! A Fun and Simple Creation

Greetings Paper and Such Fans! I'm here with you today to bring you a sweet and simple card using a newly released set from Paper and Such called Bitty Love.

I snipped apart the sentiment 'you rule!' from the ruler itself.

I then stamped the ruler five times using black Momento ink and then took the sentiment and stamped it inside the ruler image. I then very carefully trimmed them out and added a micro-brad to each one. I pulled out some of my very favorite teacher paper, matted with yellow cardstock. I stitched around the edges and added it to my skinny Kraft cardbase. My cardbase measures 5.5"x3". I adhered my rulers with three dimensional foam adhesive for some added oomph! I tied a nice fluffy bow using red Grosgrain stitched ribbon and voila...my card front was done.

For my interior, I used simple graph paper - yes, the kind you can buy at your local office supply store. I stamped it with another amazing sentiment from this set. I then stamped another ruler image to tie it in with the card front. I again, matted my paper with bright yellow cardstock and adhered it all together.

Saturday Spotlight

With the weather being so cold and windy here in the Northeast, I wanted to call to mind something warm and serene this week. How about a warm spring evening under the stars? You’re sitting there with your sweetheart enjoying the calm evening and the song birds are serenading you. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

Well, just take a gander at these lovely cards and you can begin to imagine it just as I am……

First up is our friend, Janice with some pretty in pink awesomeness. She used so many lovely elements in her card. The vintage lace just pops against the delicate flowers on the patterned paper. I love how she used burgundy ink for her focal image too. The little swirls of pearls trailing behind the butterflies are just darling!

It is believed that gazebos (then called viewing pavilions) can be traced back to about 1400 b.c. In Egyptian tombs, there were depicted on the tops of houses. Consensus is that they were used to view the surrounding lands. They were normally built out of stone and only used by the wealthy.

This next card was created by JenMarie. She kept to a clean and simple design, using just a pop of razzleberry for color. Surrounding the focal image, she used her Nestabilitiies as a border to add some contrasting color around the edges. This sets off that panel from the embossed card base so nicely! Did you notice the tiny butterfly by the sentiment? It’s included with the stamp set and I love how she added the tiny seed pearl to its center.

Gazebos were also popular in ancient Rome and Persia, where they could take form from colorful tents with mats on the floors to elaborate two-story buildings with their own cupolas, columns and ornate seats. Some ingenious engineers even built them across pools or running water to help cool the marble floors!

Our last card to be spotlighted is by Stacy. She has taken this set to a whole ‘nother level!! The main image is stamped in sepia ink and she used some FlowerSoft to add texture and color to the vines. WOW! I absolutely love the neutral pallet of browns and oranges with just that little bit of pink in the distressed layer and flowers. The stitching around the image mimics the stitched edges of the ribbon and ties the whole card together superbly!

During the 14^th century, France had four gazebos built around the Louvre. The style of building soon spread to Renaissance England where they were fashioned after the main house and used for entertaining. The actual name “gazebo” wasn’t used until the late 1700s when a book “New Designs for Chinese Temples” was published. The origin of the word gazebo is said to have been from the words “gaze” meaning to look and “ebo” meaning “I shall see”. Since they were originally used as points of observation, the name stuck.

Now, for those of you wish actual gazebos – enjoy them and pass along the tidbits of knowledge that you gained. For the rest of us……just gaze once again at these beautiful cards and dream!

How To Time!

Hi there! It's Pattie here to share a tutorial with you today! You may have seen my Milton with Poppy card from last week (you can see it HERE) and were wondering how to do the 'out of the circle' technique I mentioned, so I'm here to show you how! For the purpose of this tutorial and since there are so many pictures, I made the pictures small, but you can click on any picture to see it larger. Are you ready?

Let's start by gathering our supplies. You'll need your paper, stamp, block and ink along with scissors, your favorite shaped dies (I'm using a circle) and a pencil.

Decide which size die you want to use and place it over your stamped image where you want to cut it out.

Mark with pencil on the outside of the die and next to the image lines that will 'stick out' of the circle. I also make a tiny mark on the inside of the die next to the image line so I can line it up perfectly later on...it gets erased later anyway.

I find it helpful to mark the outside of the circle across from my cuts to line it up just right! You can see my mark in the lower right area outside the die.

Here's what it looks like when you remove the die.

Cut around the part of the image that will be 'outside' the die carefully, making sure you don't cut any of the white area that is 'inside' the die. Cut just a bit further along the image line to allow for the die to slip under the image.

Slip the die under the image and line it up with your pencil marks.

Before running it through your die cut machine, place a piece of white paper over the image to protect it from getting the wrinkly marks from your plates (mine are well loved as you can see!).

Here's what you should have after die cutting and before removing the die.

The finished product is ready to be colored and placed on your card or project.

Hello! Janice here today to share a card with you that I made using the new Wild Rose set! I went for a vintage style card. I stamped and colored my image with prismacolor pencils. Then I crumpled my old dictionary page and added some Tim Holtz Antique Linen ink to make it more distressed looking. Added some crocheted lace, weaved in some twine and finished it off with a double bow and button. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!!
